The basics

What is roll stock?

Roll stock is flexible packaging film supplied on a roll instead of as finished bags. Your packing line forms the film into a pouch, fills it and seals it in one motion, which makes roll stock one of the most cost-effective ways to package at volume.

Because the bag is made on your machine, the film specs matter: web width, repeat length, core size, unwind direction and eye marks all need to match your equipment. We work from your machine’s specs and your co-packer’s requirements so the film runs smoothly from the first roll.

Unwind direction

Which way should your film unwind?

Packing machines need film to come off the roll a specific way. This is the common eight-position chart: pick the one your line uses, or ask your operator for a photo of the roll on the machine.

FAQs

Roll Stock & Films: FAQs

More answers on our FAQ page, or call (647) 494-7229.

What do you need to quote roll stock?

Your machine type, web width, repeat (cut-off) length, core size, maximum roll diameter or weight, unwind direction, eye mark position and the product you are packing. If you don’t have them yet, your co-packer or machine manual will.

Is roll stock cheaper than pre-made pouches?

Usually, at volume. You are buying film rather than finished bags, and your line forms the packs. The trade-off is the packing equipment and setup, which is why roll stock suits higher volumes and co-packers.

Which print method suits roll stock?

Flexo is the most cost-effective choice for most roll stock runs, rotogravure suits very long runs that need premium image quality, and digital is ideal for short runs and testing new designs.

What is unwind direction?

It describes which way the printed film comes off the roll relative to your artwork. Machines need the film to unwind a specific way, so we confirm it with you before printing.

Do you ship to co-packers?

Yes. We can ship roll stock straight to your co-packer, and our sister company copacker.ca offers food co-packing in Vancouver and Toronto.
