The basics

What makes a mylar bag child-resistant?

“Mylar bag” is the everyday name for pouches made with metallized polyester film, valued for blocking light, oxygen and moisture. A child-resistant mylar bag adds a special zipper that takes two coordinated actions to open, which young children find hard to do but adults can manage.

Child resistance is certified by testing finished packages with panels of young children and adults under recognized protocols such as ISO 8317 and the US 16 CFR 1700.20 standard. Our pouches are certified child-resistant; ask us for the certification documents for the exact format you order.

Selling cannabis in Canada? Plain-packaging rules limit finishes, so we will help you choose a compliant option.

Child resistance, explained

How child-resistant packaging is tested

Certification protocols such as ISO 8317 and the US 16 CFR 1700.20 test finished packages with people, not machines.

01

Child panel

Panels of young children try to open the package. To pass, most of them must be unable to open it, even after being shown how.

02

Adult panel

Adults then confirm the package can still be opened and properly reclosed, so it stays usable every day.

03

Reclose to protect

Zipper pouches only protect children when fully closed, so make “press to close” part of your on-pack instructions.

Packaging cannabis for Canada?

Health Canada’s rules go beyond child resistance: plain packaging with a uniform colour, limits on branding and finishes, and the standardized cannabis symbol and health warning messages. Holographic and metallic effects are generally not an option for Canadian cannabis. We help you choose compliant formats and finishes, but always check final artwork against Health Canada’s current packaging and labelling guide.

FAQs

Child-Resistant Mylar Bags: FAQs

More answers on our FAQ page, or call (647) 494-7229.

Are your mylar bags certified child-resistant?

Yes. Our child-resistant pouches are certified. Ask us for the certification documents for the exact size and format you are ordering, and keep them on file for your compliance records.

Are mylar bags smell-proof?

High-barrier metallized films are odour-resistant and contain smells far better than ordinary plastic bags, especially when the zipper is fully closed. No flexible package is completely odour-proof, so store products the way your regulations require.

Can I use holographic finishes for cannabis in Canada?

Canadian cannabis packaging must follow Health Canada’s plain-packaging rules, which limit colours, finishes and branding, so holographic and metallic effects are generally not an option there. Brands selling in other markets often use them. We will help you choose a compliant finish for each market.

What sizes do you offer?

Common fills include 3.5 g, 7 g, 14 g and 28 g for flower, plus pouches sized for edibles, gummies and other products. Every bag is made to order, so we size it to your product.

Do child-resistant bags work after opening?

Yes. The child-resistant zipper reseals after each use. It has to be fully closed to protect children, so remind customers to press it shut.

Do you print both sides?

Yes. Front and back can both be printed, including space for regulatory panels.
